Being a joint presentation from Openreach and TalkTalk Group with the aim of providing an update on the proof of concept trial being run from the end of August. The talk will provide an overview of the setup being tested and what questions we hope to answer along the way. Early findings may be included, but this will obviously be dependent on the amount of trial services made live by the presentation deadline. To finish there may be an opportunity to share some thoughts on what it may mean to UK network operators when ultra fast services become the norm.

The UK has for 2 decades been world-leading in Internet Exchange innovation, operations and governance, home to some of the largest and best run IXPs globally. This has not been without a few bumps along the way however, and the count of failed exchanges to date is higher than the successful ones. This talk reviews the history and some experiences of the various more or less well-conceived and resourced failed British IXPs, and attempts to arrive at some lessons about how *not* to do it.

How We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Network (Main Session)

The neteng org at Facebook has built/leverage several systems for managing and operating the production network, including an audit framework, alarms daemons, drainers, and an automatic remediation engine. This talk will focus on these technologies and how they have helped improve user experience, administer complexity, automate day-to-day operations, mitigate impact, and increase reliability.

Analysis of F-root placement using RIPE Atlas (Main Session)

ISC is using visualisations derived from RIPE Atlas data to analyse the effectiveness of F-root's existing peering and transit arrangements and to plan for future sites. The presentation will include details of how this analysis has already led to some changes in our network configuration. If possible it will be accompanied by a live demonstration of "before and after" visualisations showing the effects of individual changes.

Using BGP for realtime import and export of spam whitelist/blacklist entries (Main Session)

In the battle against Spam, many mail server admins collect and distribute IP addresses of systems that send them Spam. However, distribution of these lists are traditionally limited to 2 methods. * is periodically downloading this list from a source, usually a web server often causing massive load and slowness at the top of the hour. * is a real-time lookup against an external provider (such as dns-rbls) so your response time is dependent on how fast they respond or timeout. This talk discusses a 3rd solution: using BGP to distribute the IP addresses in a real-time manner.

Verizon’s DBIR remains the principal research report of its kind and this year it delves into data from over 2,000 confirmed breaches and almost 80,000 security incidents. Verizon has analysed data from 61 countries provided by 70 law enforcement and other security organisations. In analysing all this data, the DBIR identifies nine attack patterns that describe the vast majority of threats and demonstrates which ones pose the biggest danger to any specific industry vertical. Our Information Security presenter will offers insights and recommendations that can help companies better understand the threat landscape and how to manage this risk. Given the sheer number of cyber security threats currently worldwide and with the cost of breaches being so high, companies large and small can’t afford a misstep in their defence strategy. Verizon’s presentation will help companies gain a better understanding of the security threats that threaten us all, which in turn will help them prioritise their security efforts.
