Description
Balquhidder Community Broadband is developing a FTTP-based service to its local community. After campaigning for more than eight years, exclusion from DSSB meant that the community was then able to raise public grant finance to progress its goals of delivering 1 Gbit broadband to each property.
Summary
Balquhidder’s relatively small size means that FTTP economics are marginal and the project has had to look to engaging active community support to reduce costs. Locally, that means partnering with Bogons to provide backhaul via their nearby Cultybraggan bunker, engaging with key local business users (high-end hotels) and using community effort to carry out much of the dig.
BCB has had an interesting journey to get to the current position where hopefully this year will see the delivery of ultrafast broadband to the Balquhidder community and the development benefits which this will bring.
