2 IPv6 Only Hosting

Mythic Beasts launched IPv6 only hosting services in 2014 and now around 5% of all servers on their network are IPv6 only, no IPv4, no RFC1918 and no NAT44. This talk details the journey to commercially offering and successfully selling IPv6 single stack.

3 IP Networks in the TV Studio: Recent work by BBC R&D

The IP Studio project at BBC R&D is investigating how we can produce live TV content using COTS servers and IP networks instead of specialised audio and video hardware. This could give us a flexible, cost-effective platform for creating both conventional TV programmes and new forms of immersive and interactive content for delivery over IP. This presentation will start with an overview of IP Studio and its architecture.

5 dnsdist: DNS, latency and DoS-aware load balancing

"dnsdist is a highly DNS-, DoS- and abuse-aware loadbalancer. Its goal in life is to route traffic to the best server, delivering top performance to legitimate users while shunting or blocking abusive traffic." This recently released open source product has proven to be widely useful in protecting DNS infrastructure & providing optimal service in the face of malicious traffic. It has also turned out to be surprisingly useful in 'fixing up what is wrong', on one occasion saving a 100k home gateway rollout from replacement. In this presentation, we'll outline the why and wherefore of dnsdist, including several common usecases.

12 A brief walk through some history and findings of NASA's telecommunication network during Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programmes

"They can land man on the moon but vendor X can't still write bug free code!". Since Sputnik started the space race, it infact actually became a relay race across many different things, from integrated circuits to welding torches no period has surpassed this time for the pace of innovation. Communications was clearly a key requirement of "landing a man on the moon and returning him safety to the Earth". I'll explore my own personal research of this and some other facets of early networking and in effect the birth of our industry.

13 Implementing "safe browsing" cost effectively using open source DNS

Some governments have pressured service providers into providing 'safe browsing'. In other countries, this is being explored as well. DNS has been chosen by a number of subscribers as a cost effective way of supplying such 'safe' browsing. In this presentation, we'll outline how PowerDNS Recursor (open source) hooks can be utilized to implement selective access to DNS either on a per-user or even on a per-device basis.

15 Balquhidder Community Broadband Community Interest Company

Balquhidder Community Broadband is developing a FTTP-based service to its local community. After campaigning for more than eight years, exclusion from DSSB meant that the community was then able to raise public grant finance to progress its goals of delivering 1 Gbit broadband to each property.

16 Delivering Wireless to an Urban environment - How we networked the Tour de France

The University of Cambridge is currently rolling out wireless provision across its many departments and buildings but the estate of the University in Cambridge also extends to the City centre. In partnership with the City Council, and in time for the visit of The Tour de France, the University's Network Division worked against the clock to provide free public wireless in the streets and parks of Cambridge. With the clock counting down to Le Grand Depart from Parkers Piece, it was a race against time to deliver wireless provision to places it's never been before. This presentation is an insight into how working with multiple partners within an urban environment can provide unique challenges and fulfilling rewards.
