Sky Broadband is at the leading edge in deploying new network implementations and router products to handle huge growth in broadband traffic and subscriber numbers. This presentation describes network growth and evolution through four generations of router technology as subscriber numbers have grown to 6 million and total traffic from 40 Gbit/s to 8000 Gbit/s. It describes the multiple hardware and architectural solutions used, transition process and experience gained. Topics include: • Early deployment of Cisco NCS5516 routers to provide an order of magnitude increase in routing capacity. • Extensive programme to bring CDN on-net and to localise where possible in order to minimise peering and transmission costs. • Adoption of latest 100G optical transmission and interface standards to maximise fibre efficiency and reduce cost. • Planning and Forecasting Process • Rollout of Ipv6 to all subscribers to position Sky network for future growth

The high capacity, reliable and redundant Facebook datacenter networks are built using a CLOS topology. We often talk about how these topologies scale up to build massive server networks. This talk describes how these same topologies can be scaled down to meet the needs of a small to medium sized network using industry standard vendor provided switches.

The sophistication with which cybercriminals are creating IoT botnets continues to increase, as does the type of attacks they are launching with them – the latest innovation sees destination modulation being used to deliver attacks which are effective at doing harm even when conventional DDoS protection is in place. Understand why this new vector requires an always-on approach to DDoS mitigation.

Most networks are built from closed source proprietary solutions and tested with black box testers. Many of operators suffer from limitations regarding feature requests/security fixes/bug fixes/interop issues/undocumented behaviour or troubleshooting methods. Various open source software solutions exist for Linux, which provide the facilities to test a range of generic network devices. Descriptions, comparisons, use cases and real world results are provided for some of the different software tools available; to show how they can be used to profile and verify network devices and functions at layers 2/2.5 (Ethernet/MPLS) in detail. These can help operators better test vendor claims, validate RFPs and catch issues before the equipment is deployed into the live network.
